1.Michael Jackson: Thriller
This has been voted the best music video of all time and rightly so. Michael Jackson known as the legend of pop shows just how amazing and how outrageous his personality is. His quality dance moves are what makes this video as great as it is, with a spooky dark atmosphere Michael is walking a girl home when he suddenly turns into a monster with amazing costumes and an amazing dance cast. The video is intriguing while by far the most entertaining I've seen. I believe after watching the 100 Greatest Music Videos that a key to the making a good music video is the performance of the main actor as that's what seems to be voted for as the best videos. As I'm playing the main part, this puts tremendous pressure on me but I feel after watching these music videos, I am prepared to do this.
2.Peter Gabriel: Sledgehammer
3. A-ha: Take on Me
4. Queen: Bohemian Rhapsody
5. Madonna: Like a Prayer
6. Robbie Williams: Rock DJ
Rock DJ is one of the best music videos around as it just typifies Robbie William's personality and why he is in the music industry mainly on his personality. Before there had been few explicit videos but Robbie takes it too new levels. The video is based in a nightclub where Robbie is surrounded by many attractive ladies as he starts to strip removing his clothing. Robbie keeps removing items of clothing until he is completely nude when he decides to change the mood of the video by going from confident and attractive to grotesque as special effects allows him to show him ripping his skin off and throwing it around the club. A quality video that you can't take your eyes off.
7. Michael Jackson: Billie Jean
8. The Verve: Bittersweet Symphony
9. Madonna: Vogue
10. Nirvana: Smells Like Teen Spirit
11. Coldplay: The Scientist
12. Michael & Janet Jackson: Scream
13. Pink Floyd: Another Brick in the Wall

35. Sinead O'Connor: Nothing Compares 2U
This video is a very simple idea but a very clever one. The whole video we just see Sinhead O'Connor's face as she gives an amazing performance. Towards the end, she starts to cry which makes the viewer even more emotional showing how a simplistic idea can be so effective.

This video is clever as it is probably the most emotional video I've seen. It is Johnny Cash's last video before he past away a few weeks later. This video has the purpose to celebrate the life of the legend that is Johnny Cash as it shows you his fragile state he is in in the video and then shows flashbacks at him in his finest hours. This video makes you appreciate life and is one that will touch most viewers.

The Media Institution
Following on from my previous post, the Media institution does a much more professional job with the more adequate devices provided to them. The Media institution are approached to promote a song by making a music video to provide a visual image of the song to the public. When first around, music videos were hugely popular due to the fascination of videos and television but as modern technology has developed, the popularity and interest of music videos has decreased. Music videos used to be always on terrestrial television usually on Channel 4 with a huge amount of viewers. However, in the modern era there are now music channels dedicated to music videos such as MTV and other similar music channels. These channels get nowhere near the amount of viewers that music videos attracted when the music video was first around.

The Process of Creating A Music Video
When creating a music video there are many steps you have to go through;
1: We had to choose our music and ask for permission to use their music.
2: We then had to storyboard ideas for our music video and discuss ideas on how we want it to look.
3: We then have to discuss possible locations, props and costumes that we are going to use to shoot our music video.
4: We then have to arrange time in our own time to shoot the music video.
5: We need to have one of the members of the group lip syncing our chosen song and integrate this into the video.
6: After we have shot the music video, we need to edit the music video so it syncs with the music and the person's singing in the video.

How do you manage the success of the music promo video?
They're are lots of ways the success of a music video can be judged;
1. Word of mouth - If a music video is successful, a lot of people will be talking about it for whatever reason whether it be how good, bad or controversial the music video is.
2. Hits on YouTube - in the modern world, all music videos are uploaded onto YouTube and if a music video is successful it will have several hits of people watching it on YouTube mainly due to people sharing the link with others who will then watch it giving it more hits.
3. Newspaper Articles/ TV Reports - a music video can be judged on what the media says such as music critics and how they report how successful the video is to the public.
4. How many times shown on TV - the success of a video can be judged on how many times music channels such as MTV show the video depending on what demand the video is with the public and whether the video will attract viewers for the channel.
5. Downloads - the amount of downloads is a big factor in how successful the video is as the video can gain a lot of notice and publicity for the song even if the quality of the song is not as good.

Market Research - Purpose of a Music Video
In order to identify the purpose of our music video we outline some of the purposes to a music video;
Firstly, a music video is made for advertisement to advertise and promote the song to become more popular. The music video has to be eye catching and appealing to the audience in order to draw attention to the artist's song. It has to illustrate the song and promote the message that the song is trying to make. It must appeal to the visual audience otherwise the audience won't want to watch it and therefore make be put off the song even if the music is actually good. A music video has a purpose to express the artist's emotions and therefore market an image of the artist and what they are about. The music video can also tell a story of what the song may be trying to say, with a visual image of the song it may be easier to understand for the audience into what is going on. The music video is meant to raise the profile and awareness of the the artist's song as they may not be well known and could be become regarded highly due to their music video.

My Top 3 Music Videos
As part of our research, one of the first things we had to do was say our top 3 favourite music videos, below are mine going from 3 to 1;
3. Thinking of Me - Olly Murs
I like this video as it is a good use of using special effects to manipulating someone's dancing and it's done in a very small space. As well as being a confessed Olly Murs fan, I think his character suits the video well as he shows his chirpy personality and flexible dancing moves with a very nice scenery on the Thames in London behind making it a typically British music video.
2. Lazy Day - Bruno Mars
I really enjoyed this video as it was totally unexpected as the song symbolises a very relaxed day where the artist Bruno Mars does nothing however they use four dancers around Bruno Mars with monkey masks to show how Bruno has slight monkey like looks. The humour with the four monkeys dancing around makes the video humerous to watch and is one you can't take your eyes off. The dancing is also done purposely in a funny way to add comedy to the video making it one enjoyable to watch.
1. Last Friday Night - Katy Perry
This video is one of my favourites due to how modern and creative it is, the usually very attractive Katy Perry dresses up as a geek and then wakes up from a party that she clearly doesn't remember. The costumes by all in the video are absolutely amazing and very colourful which makes it look attractive and catching to the eye. This shows diversity from Katy Perry and the ability to look attractive even in geek and nerd like costumes which also makes the video popular.

The Brief and Introduction
This is my blog for my A2 music blog where I have 3 pieces of coursework to complete. Firstly we have to create a music 'promo' video which has to last for up to 5 minutes. I also need to produce a 'digipak' for its release on the CD and an magazine advertisement for the digipak. On this blog, I will keep you updated and let you know of my progress.
